L'ESPACE D'UN JOUR (IN THE SPACE OF A DAY)

1994

Performance and video installation, on the different spaces that one experiences each day.

Stéphan Barron moved during 3 days, from dawn to dusk.
The first day was motionless: "In the space of a motionless day", the camera was placed on an axis that rotated 360 degrees during the day and recorded the surrounding countryside.

The second day, Stephan Barron made a 30-kilometer circle in the country on foot.

The third day, in Normandy, Stéphan Barron drove in a circle 300 kilometers around.

To these three days correspond three movements, three speeds, three spaces. Stephan Barron left every morning from the same spot, came back every evening to the same spot, and each time made bigger and bigger circles. During these three "movement-days", Stephan Barron gathered video images, ten hours worth each day, that were simultaneaously shown on 3 small video monitors in the same video installation.

In the space of a day is a reflexion on the perception of space, on the different spaces that one experiences each day. More than a "video installation", "In the space of a day" is a process that the spectator is invited to experience. It is an invitation to experience modern forms of meditation: motionless meditation, the meditation during a walk, the meditation while driving the car. It aims to provide a new awareness of space and movement. In the installation, video takes on the secondary role of memory, of the possible; it echoes the importance of the present and the presence of the world and the self.
